Tractor pulls in hospital funds
By BOB BOUGHNER CHATHAM NEWS
JULY 20,2011
A $15,000 donation from a Dover farmer and friends will
benefit the oncology department at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.
Marc Martin of Pain Court, a cancer survivor, donated a 1951 tractor he and
friends Tom Robert and Bernie Roy restored last winter to the Dover Kinsmen
Club.
The club sold 150 tickets at $100 each on the tractor during the recent
annual Truck and Tractor Pull and earmarked the proceeds for the oncology
department.
"I received excellent care at CKHA and the staff and physicians in the
oncology department treated me and my family very well,'' Martin told The
Chatham Daily News.
He said he was pleased the Dover Kinsmen Club was a willing and able partner
with him to raise funds for the "very worthwhile cause.''
Martin received cancer treatment from September 2006 to April 2007.
The restoration of the International Farmall Super 'A' tractor took several
months to complete. The winning ticket in the raffle was held by Frank
Letourneau.
Michelle Grzebien of the CKHA foundation said the organization is
"overwhelmed by the generosity of Martin, Robert and Roy, the Kinsmen Club of
Dover and the many individuals who purchased tickets.
She said the donation will be used to purchase much-needed equipment and
furnishings for the oncology department.
"We hope Martin's actions will serve as an inspiration to others who have
received exceptional care at CKHA,'' she said.

Dover Kinsmen & Kinettes support K of C's Wild Game - Charity Benefit

Donation will help make life easier for two families
By ELLWOOD SHREVE, THE DAILY NEWS
April 12/11
PAIN COURT --
Two Chatham families with children suffering lifetime illnesses will get some
assistance thanks to an annual fundraising event held here on Sunday.
The proceeds from the 18th annual
Wild Game Supper and Charity Auction, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus
Council 9693, will help purchase a respiratory physical therapy vest, which
costs $20,000, to help two-year- old twins Jaxon and Jayce Galick cope with
having Cystic Fibrosis.
Rob and Heather Kilidjian will use
their portion of the proceeds to purchase a ramp for their home and saving for a
specially equipped van to transport their three-year-old Ethan, who has Cerebral
Palsy.
Tyler and Angela Galick said they
have one of the jackets on loan from Angel's Wings Foundation.
Tyler Galick said CF is a
hereditary disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, sinuses and liver, called
the "silent disease."
Galick said the therapy vest, which
is used every day on Jaxon and Jayce, is a benefit to the boys and them as
parents, because they can each get the therapy at the same time.
"It has the ability to improve
their lung function by up to 30 per cent," Galick said.
He added without the vest, his wife
would have to try to do the respiratory therapy by hand.
Angela Galick said the vest is
valuable because "trying to get a two-year-old to sit still during physiotherapy
is difficult."
The couple is grateful to be
receiving this kind of support.
Rob Kilidjian said a ramp will help
make transporting Ethan, who is a growing boy, a lot easier in his specialized
stroller.
Just carrying
the lad around the house is a chore, he said, because Ethan can't hold his head
up so he is like "dead weight."
He added they are working on
funding to get a lift system with tracking on the ceiling to help move Ethan
around when he gets older.
Heather Kilidjian said the ramp
will help make getting out of the house with her son easier, adding she often
would only go through the effort it was necessary to go to an appointment.
She said receiving the financial
assistance "takes that extra weight off our shoulders worrying about where the
money is going to come from."
Norb King, chairman of the event,
said it typically raises $16,000-$17,000, thanks to the generous support
received from area businesses, as well as the Dover Kinsmen and Kinette
clubs.
While the final amount raised won't
be known for a few weeks, King said the K of C is happy to raise this kind of
money to help families in need.

The Dover Kinsmen and Kinnettes Club was in a giving spirit this week.
The
local group handed out two significant donations, one to the Chatham-Kent
Children’s Treatment Centre, and the other to the Chatham-Kent Children’s
Safety Village.
The Treatment Centre were given $10,000 and the Safety Village received a
cheque for $12,500.
Art Stirling of the Treatment Centre said the funds will go towards their
adaptive sports program.
The Dover raised the funds through various events that were held in the
past year.

At their Grande Pointe clubhouse, members of the Dover Kinsmen/Kinettes Club
presented Art Stirling, Executive Director of the Children’s Treatment Centre
Foundation, with a donation totalling $10,000 to be used toward the agency’s
adapted sports programs for children with developmental disabilities.
“The generosity of the Dover Kinsmen/Kinettes demonstrates yet again why
service clubs are the heart and soul of communities across Chatham-Kent,” said
Stirling. “This gift will touch special needs children from across the
municipality and allow them to experience the health and social benefits of
organized sport.” Upon accepting the cheque, Stirling added that the Centre
supports numerous families from across North Kent and the Wallaceburg/Dresden
areas.
A portion of the donation represents the proceeds from a recent chili
cook-off the Kinsmen organized at Bob ‘n’ Buoys Restaurant in Mitchell’s Bay.
